Jamie Lynn Spears went public in OK! Magazine and revealed her pregnancy at sixteen years old which features the teen mom and three-week-old Maddie Briann on their cover. Basically Jamie Lynn wanted to let everyone know that she is doing great as a new mom, and that “being a mom is the best feeling in the world!”
While it is wonderful, for her sake and the baby’s, that Jamie Lynn is adapting to motherhood so well, and I commend her for stepping up to the challenge of being a good mother to her baby, I am troubled and somewhat disappointed that she didn’t step up to the challenge of speaking to her peers and young Zoey 101 fans that they should wait to have sex, and they should not have babies at 16. I’m am in no way judging her for having a baby…we all sin and fall short, and my prayers go out to her. But what I am saying is that she should have taken a different approach in this interview where she does not talk at all of any difficulties, “everything is fine…the baby is on a routine, the delivery was pretty easy, the baby doesn’t cry much…yahda, yahda, yahda.”
With all the diseases & teen pregnancies today, and the struggles of children growing up with only one parent, it just portrays this falsehood that it’s okay to sleep with your boyfriend unprotected and that early motherhood is a piece of cake! Some may say she’s not obligated to her fans to be a role model, but I beg to differ. I feel that if you chose that line of work…than you automatically become a role model to your target market, whether you like it or not. I understand she may have been worried about the press chewing her up if she said it was difficult or was having any problems, however she was a big girl when she decided to make an adult decision to have unprotected, premarital sex, so now she should have been a big girl and said ‘things are going well with the support of my family, but I made a mistake, and wish I would have waited, and you should too’.
Not following Gods rules can be tragic, & there will always be consequences & repercussions, but if we are to follow the commands of God, we need to slow down and remember that people are watching and conduct our lives in such a way that we might be shining examples for others. We can start by asking God to give us wisdom so that we can look beyond our own needs & see the needs of others.
